Going for Gold
Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perserverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12 v 1).
Dear Friends, Thanks to wall-to-wall TV coverage, all eyes will soon be on Beijing. As well as the olympic events themselves we shall see dramatic 'reaction shots' of the crowd as supporters and fans encourage their compatriots and heroes to historical performances. Triumphant athletes will give thanks for the 'lift' they receive from the spectators, helping them to go beyond what they thought was possible.
Now, there may be rather less press coverage of Christians going about their faith in the small but significant details of everyday life, and as far as I know there is not a reality TV show of Christian living. However, the writer of the book of Hebrews wants us to know that if we seek to follow Jesus we are not unknown to, or unmarked by, the heavenly host. There is a very real and very enthusiastic audience for all that we do because of our faith in Jesus Christ. Angels and witnesses are urging us on, willing us to succeed. They take delight in each small act of grace.
They know it is hard, they know we sometimes fall, but they are longing that we shall look at Jesus and follow his way of life and love right to the end. With their personal encouragement, may we all strive for a 'personal best' this summer, turning away from what weighs us down and turning daily towards Jesus himself in all that we do. That's how each one of us can 'run the race' and claim the prize.
